Abstract
The article is devoted to the linguistic analysis of the hydronyms of the Russian North. The hypothesis of researchers proposing a connection between the names of rivers and Sanskrit is refuted. In fact, the etymology of the studied hydronyms is reflected in the Baltic language environment. It is once again proven that the river names are based on the verbs of the present tense singular of the 3rd person; the names of lakes come from the verbs of the past tense singular of the 3rd person. The presented principle allows us to reliably determine the origin of the hydronyms of Northern Eurasia. The proposed article makes it possible to clarify the archaeological and historical aspects of the life of ancient people in the Russian North. The opinion is confirmed that the local population in the territory of the northern region before the appearance of the Finno-Ugric peoples there were Baltic-speaking tribes.
