Abstract
It is known that Turkmen living in various countries of the East have always preserved their national identity: traditions, culture and language. One of the important elements of this culture are markets bazaars (markets). The dictionary of the Iranian author Mohammed Moini explains that “a bazaar is a place for buying, selling goods and eating”. The bazaar has always been a special place; it is not for nothing that the people say “Bazarsyz shaher mazara menzar” (“Without a bazaar, a city is like a cementery”). “A city without a bazaar is like a mazar (cemetery)”.
On Turkmen soil, bazaars have been known since ancient times, for instance, during the period of the Parthian state, then in the Middle Ages, especially in the Seljuk era, Merv bazaars actively functioned along the routes of the Great Silk Road. This is evidenced by many primary sources, for example, “Khudu-d ul alem al-mashrik ve ulal Maghrib,” and many written sources from the Seljuk period.
At the end of the 19th – beginning of the 20th centuries, with the creation of new Turkmen villages and cities, bazaars began to take on a certain industry direction, for example: Dayhan Bazaar, Ak Bazaar, Lyalezar, ect. Also, bazaars functionrd not only in Turkmenistan, but also in places of compact residence of Turkmens, for example in Afghan Turkestan, Turkmen Sahra in Iran, Turkmen Eli in Iraq, ect. At them, Turkmen goods were represented mainly by carpets, rugs, astrakhan fur, patterned felts, carpets, textiles, jewelry, etc.
