ON THE ETYMOLOGY OF THE TOPONYM BERLIN

Abstract
The article is devoted to the analysis of toponyms in East Germany. Based on the analysis of geographical features, the etymology of the oikonyms of Berlin and cities with a similar word-formation model was revealed. The names of the considered settlements are associated with hydronyms - water bodies on the banks of which they are located. The origin of toponyms has an explanation in the Baltic language environment. Subsequently, Slavic and Germanic influence can be traced.
