ETYMOLOGY OF THE ETHNONYMS KHAZARS, YAS, KASOGI

Abstract
The article is devoted to the analysis of the ethnonyms Khazars, Kasogi, Yasy. Based on an analysis of historical information and geographical features of the settlement area, it was established that the ethnonyms Yasy and Kasogi were originally demonyms. The names of these ancient peoples reflected the characteristics of the area and designated the people living in the rocky mountains. The ethnonym Yasy arose in the Baltic (on the basis of which the Old Russian language developed) linguistic environment; Kasogi have an Ossetian etymology. The ethnonym Khazars is based on a color-determining feature of their appearance – «red», which is translated in the Tatar and Kazakh languages.
