OVERVIEW OF MATERIALS FOR RAILWAY SLEEPERS AND MALFUNCTIONS OF STRESSED CONCRETE SLEEPERS

Abstract
Railways form the basis of the economy of all countries, transporting both goods and passengers. Sleepers play a key role in ensuring the operational characteristics of the track and safety in railway transport. This article briefly discusses the materials that were used for the manufacture of sleepers at the early stages of the development of railways. Extensive research has been conducted worldwide on static, dynamic and shock analysis of prestressed sleepers. It has been shown that most sleepers do not live up to the expected design life, which leads to huge replacement and repair costs.
