Abstract
Every year the number of foreign students who are forced or eager to learn Russian is growing. Teachers need to use modern methods of teaching Russian as a foreign language to achieve better results. Expansion of vocabulary of students, of course, is an important part in teaching a foreign language. The use of synonyms in speech shows that a foreign student speaks Russian at a good level. It is important to choose those methods of vocabulary expansion that fit the level and capabilities of students. It is also necessary to take into account the goals of studying Russian as a foreign language.
