The article is devoted to the cultural understanding of counterculture hippies who had a significant impact on subsequent youth subcultures and the global culture as a whole. Shows the factors that influenced the emergence of hippies in the United States: a boom in education, development of mass media, the presence of charismatic leaders and the earlier counterculture "beat generation". Specifics of hippies.
