Abstract
The article describes how various scholars understand the term “phonestheme”; the author distinguishes the narrow and the broad meaning of the term. The attempt is made (perhaps for the first time) to create the typology of the phonestheme. The value of this typology is that it allows characterizing any phonesthemes using some criteria. The author shows the location of phonesthemes in the system of language levels. The possibility and the limitations of the usage of etymological data for explaining the phenomenon of phonesthemes are discussed.
