Abstract
The article analyzes the semantic and pragmatic factors determining the realization of various modal meanings with the help of infinitive complexes. The semantic factors include the deep structure of the corresponding construction, the character of negation, the semantics of the nucleus of the complex. The pragmatic factors encompass the relevant power relations between the speaker and the addressee, the actual communicative parameters of the utterance, in which the infinitive complex is used.
