AbstractThe article is devoted to the description of peculiarities of the US toponymic vocabulary that represents a huge basis for the study of the history, culture and language of American people. The authors give characteristics of two variants of the US place names vocabulary that perform descriptive, identifying and emotional functions. They include nicknames and abbreviations which along with the official names of the states are considered to be universally acknowledged in the language and widely used by native speakers.Keywords: abbreviation, descriptive characteristic, identifying function, nickname, place name, semantic approach, toponymic vocabulary
