Abstract
The article highlighted the concept of competitiveness and its application to the engineering industry. The main industry of the Russian Federation and the place of mechanical engineering there. By selecting the main problems: a strong depreciation of fixed assets, low attractiveness of the industry, the lack of qualified personnel. As well as ways to solve the major problems of machine-building complex.
