Abstract
The paper briefly reviews the works dealing with general and specific issues of tourism development in a region (a case of the Republic of Karelia). Relevance of the topic is determined by the necessity of diversification of employment in rural and forest communities. The review includes research papers that focus on the development of rural tourism in the border areas of the Republic of Karelia.
