Abstract
In binding and elimination of the endotoxin (ET) form the systemic blood both the cell-mediated and humoral factors are involved. Among the humoral components of the antiendotoxic immunity, it is the anti-glycolipid antibodies that play the major protective part, since they can activate ET of any origin and are capable of interacting with the lipid A which is a component of the LPS of different gram-negative bacteria. Therefore, the titers of these antibodies can be considered as integral indices of the humoral component of the antiendotoxic immunity.
Due to the ability of lipopolysaccharides (LPS) to interact with the cell membrane receptors (CD, Fc, Toll-like, etc.) numerous cells are capable of binding and eliminating ET from the systemic blood circulation. In this respect the fixed macrophages in the liver and polymorphonuclear leucocytes which represent the residual ET-binding cellular systems and blood cells, respectively, are considered to be most significant. Accordingly, analysis of the granulocytic component of antiendotoxic immunity can provide clinicians with useful information on the body antiendotoxic immunoprotection status and the spare capacity to resist the pathogenic effects of high LPS levels.
