Abstract
The notion of collective identity has been deeply rooted to the classical sociological theories. E. Durkheim postulates a notion of collective consciousness, K. Marx a notion of class consciousness, M. Weber a notion of Verstehen, F. Toennis a notion of Gemeinschaft. Each of the named classics addresses the “we”-aspect of a group, i. e. the common features which unite group members together. Similar properties have been considered “natural” or “essential” features emerging due to physiological specificities, psychological predispositions, regional conditions, and property statuses. Opponent to essentialism is constructivism targeting at social rituals, symbols, and practices, which facilitate the scholars translations of such differences into social facts.
