AbstractRecently, too many people died after traffic accinedts. More than one-fifth of these deaths are among pedestrians. The question of the pedestrians safety will necessarily occur because automobilization level is increasing each day in the modern world. One of the best options to protect pedestrians is a construction of footbridges. The spans of pedestrian bridges are making of different materials. Thus, in order to select a material for the span of a pedestrian bridge, it is necessary to consider in detail each of them. The object of research is the material of the pedestrian bridges span. The purpose of the research is to set the parameters of the various types of span and to identify the most efficient materials for the specific conditions.
In this article was made the analysis of the following four materials: wood, concrete, metal and fiberglass. The history of the creation of each type of span was considered in details. Span design schemes were shown in the article. The application of them in different environments (the natural landscape and urban development) was analyzed. The most typical span lengths were defined. It provides a detailed classification of each type of span. The advantages and disadvantages of each type were identified. Advantages and disadvantages were considered by the following characteristics: cost, service time, operating costs, aesthetic appeal, weight of the material. In addition, examples of the use of bridges, both in Russia and in Europe.
As a result, the best material according to certain criteria was found. Keywords: bridge span, fiberglass, metal, operating costs, pedestrian bridge, reinforced concrete, span structure cost, wood
