The results of theoretical analysis of the adaptive characteristics of children with mental retardation in the educational environment. We consider the practical and theoretical work of local scientists on the stated problem. It is shown that the mechanism of adaptation is dependent on various external and internal factors affecting a child with mental retardation. As a result, there is a need to identify children at risk with maladaptive behaviors at an early age stages.
Mentally retarded children do not adapt to the school environment on their own, they are characterized by socially disapproved behaviors, disharmonious assimilation of the program material, and as a consequence of neurotic disorders.
