AbstractThis research aims at finding and identifying statehood elements in the complicated and contradictory phenomenon in the period of the Civil War (1918-1920) – the movement of N.I. Makhno and his nearest associates. As methodological instruments, the author used the following methods: academic and historical discourse, review of memoirs and other sources of that period. The main conclusion of this research is that Huliaipole’s phenomenon can be evaluated as a phenomenon of a Cossack-Peasant Republic: a proto-state formation created under the difficult circumstances of military-political and economic crisis in the traditional state institutions and vertical power system of governance. The basic driving forces of the new state formation became the peasants of Ukraine and the most passionate part of the society – the Cossacks. This research is intended to contribute to the study of statehood small forms that still remain blank spots on the pages of the National History. Keywords: Cossacks, culture, ethnos, mentality, politics, right, Russia, society, state, traditions, Ukraine
