THE POWER OF SOUND IN IMAGISM POETRY

Abstract
The paper contemplates phonosemantic features of the poetic text. The author is interested in the phenomenon of sound symbolism and the role of phonemes in creating colourful images. This research was carried out on the poems of Edith Louisa Sitwell. This article contains the results of phonosemantic analysis of 81 Sitwell`s poems that prove the influence of phonetic combinations on reader`s perception. The article refers to the relatively new field of psycholinguistics – lingvopoetics.
