THE ST.-PETERSBURG MERCHANT DYNASTY OF CHIRKINS IN THE XVIII CENTURY

Abstract
The article deals with the trading and public activity of the powerful St.-Petersburg merchants dynasty of the XVIII century – Chirkins. The success of this family was connected with the Petrine transformation ofRussia. The best representatives of the dynasty were typical enlightened merchants of the XVIII century. Their activity not only enlarged the incomes of the government, but also leaded to improvement of the city’s planning and to its decoration by new architectural masterpieces.
