AbstractThis article is devoted to the peculiarities of the development of mutual loan societies in Russia in the late 19th and the early 20th centuries. Study of the features of the legal status, governance system and monetary transactions is made on the basis of Nizhny Novgorod mutual loan society, the largest society in Russia. The author makes the conclusion about the peculiarities of mutual loan societies which allow them to compete with the private and public banks.
